Quality Systems Manager (maternity cover)

Choice People are recruiting on behalf of our client for a Quality Systems Manager to cover a 9 month maternity contract. Role involves developing, implement and maintain an effective quality management and food safety system that meets / exceeds company standards and external expectations. Drive the requirements to achieve regulatory legislation, customer and third-party standards, such as BRC Certification to the highest grade. Proactively engage with all employees to monitor implementation of the system to ensure that it is embedded in the site quality culture.

  • Design, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of HACCP based Quality Management System, including recording, storing and retrieval of records to demonstrate product safety, quality and due diligence using industry best practice, customer best practice, BRC, Third Party / Legislative requirements / recommendations.
  • Document and Maintain the QMS structure which enables the site to achieve a minimum

of Grade A in BRC certification audits whilst maintaining CLC Certification

  • To be fully conversant in Food Safety and Quality Systems, the Quality Manul, HACCP, VACCP and Food Defence Plans
  • To effectively provide documentation control and change management across site.
  • To manage both internal and external audits and preparation.
  • To provide assistance during customer visits.
  • To manage / control the site SOPs.
  • To maintain all HACCP documents and records and facilitate reviews.
  • To monitor and review internal foreign body finds.
  • To provide support during complaint investigations.
  • To control, amend and review the Quality Manual.
  • To maintain / update department training documentation.
  • Carry out any other tasks as directed by the QA / Technical Manager.
  • Design, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of the
  • laboratory Management System.
  • Lead and Manage HACCP Team and Activities and maintain all HACCP documents and records and facilitate reviews.
  • Involvement in Plant and HACCP approval for new process development and monitoring of process.
  • Establish and maintain a change control process.
  • Support the NPD Function to aid successful new product / process development through specifications, product information, reference samples and photographs.
  • Complete trend analysis, reporting and addressing incidents of non
  • Conformity, Customer Complaints and support RCA process.
  • Ensure an effective customer complaint and incident management programme is in
  • place identifying the cause of non-conformance and corrective action/ preventative measures which is driving continuous improvement.
  • Ensure effective record keeping and document control. Recording, storing and retrieving of records to demonstrate product safety, quality, consistency and due diligence using industry best practice, customer best practice, Third Party / Legislative requirements / recommendations
  • Lead an effective internal auditing system working with Department Managers to ensure continuous improvement and effective and timely close of non-conformances
  • Establish and maintain a change control process.
  • Manage the control of product specifications and other product information on site liaising with corporate QA team on revisions and new specifications and ensuring that internal specifications on site match these.
  • Maintain SPC data and trend analysis on key quality and compositional data, proactively reporting trends and non-conformances to department managers.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support the Technical Manager to manage and facilitate statutory body visits.
  • Proactive auditing and assessment of department to encourage change.
  • Management of customer complaints, serious incidents and corrective actions / preventative measures.
  • Liaise with customers & suppliers on food safety & quality Issues.
  • To manage all export documentation and certificates of analysis
  • KPI data management, completion and monitoring of any trends.
  • Prepare and present all required data for the Food Safety & Quality Reviews and site reviews as required.
  • Establish and maintain an effective laboratory internal auditing programme which will drive improvement in the standards.
  • Prepare Daily, Weekly, Monthly KPI reports as required
  • Ensure systems of positive release, traceability and recall are maintained and tested through mock recall/ traceability exercises for all ingredients and manufactured products. QA Lead during both internal and customer audit trace exercises.
  • Manage the training programme for the laboratory technicians.

TEAM

  • Provide effective team leadership for the team of Technicians in the laboratory; promote a proficient, effective and harmonious working environment based upon trust, respect and good communication and take action to address individual or group behaviour that may be detrimental to positive working relationships or an effective quality service.
  • Ensure effective, timely and accurate completion of own and Technicians’ documentation.
  • Listen and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including activities such as Team Briefings, Handovers, one-to-one coaching of Technicians, sourcing feedback and reporting to Technical Manager.
  • Through the coaching process, determine individual development needs ensuring these are clearly documented and a programme developed and implemented.
  • Ensure Technicians are appropriately trained and up-to-date at all times through internal and external training programmes and on-going coaching and development

RESPONSIBLE CARE

  • Proactively support the on-going development of safety initiatives.
  • Understand, observe and ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in and ensure that safety workplace inspections are carried out in accordance with schedule and standards.
  • Ensure risk assessments and safe systems of work are completed and understood by all Technicians.
  • Support and promote the development of an effective and pro-active safety culture on site.
  • Ensure that accidents and incidents are thoroughly investigated and escalated and that root causes of these are identified and eliminated through preventative measure
  • Ensure all operations within the QA function are carried out to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety legislation
  • Ensure that all staff are issued with, trained in and are using the correct PPE

Other

  • Carry out and comply with all company policies, procedures and instructions and any other reasonable duties deemed necessary by the company
  • Operate and contribute as an effective member of the Site Management Team, including weekend cover as part of a Duty Manager rota.
  • Undertake any other duties as considered by the company to be within the scope of the role of the site Quality Systems Manager

Qualifications

Training

3rd Level qualification in a food science or related discipline

and

A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a QA manager in an FMCG environment

Highly competent in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Formal qualification or accredited training in any of the following:

  • Lean Manufacturing certificate
  • Lead auditor course
  • Train the Trainer
  • Knowledge of SAP

Experience

A minimum of 3-5 years managing quality within an FMCG environment.

Should be able to demonstrate implementing BRC Managing QMS and driving continuous improvement.

Experience of leading a small to medium sized team, managing staff performance and KPI’s in line with business objectives.

Previous experience in dairy

Previous experience in dealing with large retailers

Previous experience supporting the implementation of quality assurance within new product ranges.
